Brock Talks: Women and Community in Ancient Athens In-Person
Join SCPL and Brock University each month for an engaging and often revelatory dive into history, culture, or the arts. Each month features a different lecture from a Brock University professor.
What opportunities did women have to develop social networks and a sense of community in a city that restricted their participation and movement? In this lecture, we explore how status affected female networks outside the household and move beyond the urban centre with its all-male lawcourt and assembly to the demes or neighbourhoods where Athenian women held office, gathered, celebrated, and became visible. It is here they gained a sense of belonging and civic responsibility on par with their male counterparts.
